Under the day, at least two cases of attempted fraud against elderly people have been reported from the Norrköping area.

The modus operandi of the fraudsters varies, but in these cases, they have claimed to be calling from the police. They have, for example, said that there has been a break-in in the neighborhood and asked for jewelry and valuable items. In the two cases reported today, the affected individuals have not lost any valuable items since they turned to relatives who alerted the police.

The fraudsters are often eloquent and persuasive and try to intimidate the victims in order to physically come and collect valuable items under the pretext that they will "take care of the matter".

The police urge caution and advise relatives to talk to elderly relatives about the risk of fraud and how to behave. The police will never call in this way and will never collect valuable items.

It is very important to follow the police's advice on contact with unknown persons.

There are ways to protect yourself and your relatives:

• Hang up if you don't know who's calling.
• Don't call numbers listed in SMS. Instead, call the company's central switchboard and ask if they're trying to contact you.
• Don't open the door for strangers.
• Never leave jewelry or valuable items with unknown people, even if they claim to be from the police or another authority. Contact a relative and ask for advice.
• Call 112 immediately if you suspect you've been contacted for fraudulent purposes.
• Never leave out bank cards, codes, or ID.
• Don't transfer money on someone else's request.
• Be aware that the fraudster can claim to be from a company, insurance company, or even a government agency. If you're the slightest unsure: call and check.
