Elderly woman targeted by telephone scam.
A 90-year-old woman reported on Tuesday that she had been a victim of a telephone scam. She had been called by a person who claimed to be calling from the Police Authority. This person then managed to persuade the woman to reveal sensitive bank information, and shortly afterwards she discovered that a larger amount was missing from her accounts.
The method used in this case is unfortunately common. The scammers are skilled, eloquent and persuasive and try to scare the victim in order to offer their "help".
It is also common with what is called physical vishing, i.e. home visits. Even then, the scammers claim to be from a government agency or similar, then try to scare the victim in order to gain access to the home. Once inside, they deceive themselves of valuable items, or one searches the apartment while the other keeps the victim.
For the victim, this is often a difficult trauma. Often, large amounts and life savings disappear from the account, or valuable goods are seized with high emotional value.
The police have clear warnings to avoid being deceived:
- Dare to be unpleasant! Hang up the phone!
- Do not respond to SMS or messages with links, and never give away your bank ID!
- Never let unknown people into your home.
- If you are called by someone who says they are from the police or another institution and asks questions about bank information or announces a home visit – always call the police on 112.
- If you have elderly relatives or friends – talk to them about this!
