Swedish for immigrants
Short for svenska för invandrare, the free basic Swedish course run by municipalities for adults whose first language is not Swedish. It is formally part of komvux, municipal adult education, and teaches reading, writing, speaking and understanding Swedish for daily life, work and further study.
The course costs nothing, and books and other materials are included. You apply through the municipality where you are registered. Courses are offered at different paces depending on your background, and many places have daytime, evening and distance options.
You cannot get CSN student finance for SFI. A completed SFI course can be one way to show the Swedish needed for citizenship.
