Swedish citizenship, decided by Migrationsverket. Stricter rules came into force on 6 June 2026 and apply to every case not decided before then: the main rule for how long you must have lived here rose from five to eight years, and the demands on leading an orderly life became tougher.

Applicants must now also support themselves, with a long-term income from work above a set level, and adults aged 16 to 66 must show knowledge of Swedish and of Swedish society, through grades, SFI or the citizenship test.

Sweden allows dual citizenship, but your other country may not. Citizens can vote in the Riksdag election and get a Swedish passport.
