Takes crime reports and issues passports, national ID cards, permits and extracts from the criminal record.
Polisen
What it handles: reporting crimes, passports and national ID cards for Swedish citizens, extracts from the criminal records register, and permits such as weapons licences. From 1 December 2026 the Police also take over applications for ID cards that Skatteverket used to issue.
How to reach it: call 112 when you need urgent help and 114 14 for everything else; that line is open around the clock and answers in Swedish and English. Many crimes can be reported online. Passports are applied for in person at a passport office.
Where people get stuck: everyone, children included, must come to the passport office in person for photos and fingerprints. A passport or national ID card is only for Swedish citizens.
