Farmers have demanded equivalent to 311 million dollars in compensation, approximately 3 billion kronor. The government has, however, only approved an initial payment of 3.1 million dollars to 740 farmers.
Around 4,000 white farmers had their land seized, which was then distributed among approximately 300,000 black families during Mugabe's land reforms at the beginning of the millennium. The reforms were motivated by the need to correct the colonial order that favored white people.
As a consequence of the land seizures and the subsequent violence, the USA and EU imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe. They have, however, been eased over the years, although the country's president Emmerson Mnangagwa and members of his inner circle still remain under sanctions.
