Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited soldiers on the front line on the outskirts of the city of Kupyansk, which Moscow claims to occupy, on Friday.

Ukraine has stated that the army has retaken two areas in the Kharkiv region in the northeast of the country and pushed back Russian troops in Kupyansk, a strategically important city and railway hub.

"We can see that many Russians are talking about Kupyansk. I was there. I congratulated the guys. Thanks to every unit and everyone who is fighting there and to everyone who is crushing the occupiers," Zelenskyy said on Telegram.

He did not reveal his exact whereabouts on Friday, but AFP was able to locate him at an access road southwest of Kupyansk.

The Russian army stated at the end of November that they had captured the city, which they occupied in 2022 before Ukrainian forces retook the city that fall.

Russia has claimed in recent months that it has made major advances on the front, but Kiev has dismissed the claims as an attempt to influence peace talks and make it appear that Ukraine is close to collapse.
