The meeting between the US president and Zelenskyy began on Sunday evening, Swedish time, at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. A few hours later, the two leaders appeared at a press conference and praised what they said had been made.
"Some would say 95, I don't know how many percent, but we have made great progress in ending the war," Trump said at the press conference.
“Tough questions”
Trump further said that the two leaders had discussions on “almost every topic” and “went into detail.”
"There are one or two very tough questions, very difficult questions, but I think we're doing very well," Trump said.
Zelenskyy said he "appreciates the progress" made in talks between the United States and Ukraine in recent weeks, mentioning the joint phone call that Trump and Zelenskyy held with European leaders in connection with the meeting.
"We agree that our teams will meet in the coming weeks to finalize all the issues discussed, and we have agreed with President Trump that he will host," Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian president says the two leaders have agreed on “90 percent” of the 20-point peace plan. A key issue is whether Ukraine will receive security guarantees from the West.
"We agree that security guarantees are the crucial milestone in achieving lasting peace," Zelenskyy said.
"Productive" conversation
Speaking to reporters shortly before the meeting, Trump said the agreement includes security guarantees.
"It will be a security agreement, it will be a stable agreement," Trump said, adding that the agreement involves European countries.
Earlier in the day, Trump had a "productive" phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he wrote on Truth Social.
A draft peace plan has been sent to Moscow, but Russian representatives did not participate in Sunday's talks.
