Zelensky positive - but wants to talk to Trump

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj welcomes the pause in attacks on energy infrastructure that the presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have agreed on. But he wants clearer messages from Trump – and does not believe that Russia really wants a ceasefire.

After we have received the details from the US President, from the American side, we will give our response, says Zelenskyj at a press conference.

He particularly wants to know more about what "the Russians have offered the Americans or what the Americans have offered the Russians".

30-day pause

Both Trump and Putin are said to have agreed on a proposal for a 30-day pause regarding attacks on energy infrastructure during their phone call on Tuesday.

Zelenskyj says that if the US guarantees such an agreement, "our side will maintain it", as long as Russia does not break it.

At the same time, he does not believe that Russia wants to end its war of aggression. Talks about a ceasefire and peace are, in his opinion, mostly a way to weaken Ukraine.

Remaining in Kursk

Ukraine's president also states that Ukrainian soldiers are still fighting in the Russian region of Kursk – where there have been reports of Russian advances in recent times.

Ukraine is fulfilling its mission in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian military there will stay as long as we need that operation, says he.

In a post on X late on Tuesday, Zelenskyj writes, in connection with Russia launching new nighttime attacks on Ukrainian cities, that "Putin has rejected the proposal for a full ceasefire". He is referring to the ceasefire that Ukraine previously agreed to after negotiations with the US.

"Only a real end to Russia's attacks on civilian infrastructure would show a willingness to end the war and bring peace closer", writes Zelenskyj.
