According to media reports, during the meeting at the White House in October, Trump pressured Zelensky to agree to territorial concessions to end Russia's war. Financial Times sources also described how the US president at one point threw aside a map of the battlefield.
He didn't throw anything, Zelenskyy tells The Guardian, using words like "normal," "businesslike" and "constructive" to describe his relationship with Trump.
During the interview at the presidential palace in Kiev, he also comments on Trump's role in world politics, saying that "everyone in the world" fears the American president. When asked if that also applies to him, however, he answers in the negative:
We are not enemies of the United States. We are friends. So why should we be afraid?
"Trump is elected by his people. We must respect the choice made by the American people," Zelensky added.
