The superstars were benched. Instead, two teenagers and a trio of 22-year-olds excelled. It looks bright for the national team – despite double losses to Spain. We sowed a seed for the future, says national team manager Tony Gustavsson.

In the turn of the month February–March next year, the qualification for the World Championship in Brazil 2027 begins.

It is, among other things, with a view to this that Tony Gustavsson wanted to give some of the younger players a chance in Tuesday evening's match against Spain.

Instead of established names like Fridolina Rolfö, Stina Blackstenius and Filippa Angeldahl, he sent in, among others, Felicia Schröder, 18, Smilla Holmberg, 19, and the national team debutant Elma Junttila Nelhage, 22, from the start against world leader Spain.

The players who stepped down from the starting eleven had an average of 94 national team matches and an average age of 30 years. Those who came in had an average of two national team matches and an average age of 20 years, summarizes Tony Gustavsson.

And we got some interesting answers.

”Fearless playing style”

Now Spain had a 4–0 win to build on from the first match. But the young replacements took charge, before the veterans were substituted in in the second half.

I think that when they look back at these matches, they will feel that they have learned an enormous amount about what is required, says Tony Gustavsson.

The national team captain praises, among others, Elma Junttila Nelhage's debut in midfield and Hammarby talent Smilla Holmberg, who came in as right-back and ran and ran and ran.

Look at Smilla's power and completely fearless playing style. I love her mentality. It was incredibly impressive, he says.

Smilla Holmberg was also named the match's player by the supporters.

Of course, you should have respect when you meet the world leaders. But for my part, I like it, to be challenged and meet the very best. It motivates me, says the 19-year-old.

”Old lady”

Another who was impressed by the young team was Kosovare Asllani – who before the match was praised for having passed 200 national team matches last summer.

They showed that they wanted to be involved and are here to stay, says the 36-year-old.

With the rejuvenation of the team, her own leadership role is also growing, notes the midfield veteran. As if it were not enough to keep track of the slightly older teammates.

Good lord, it's non-stop, 24/7, jokes Asllani.

They are a bit more free spirits, if you say so, busy with Tiktok and that kind of thing. And when you lie in bed like an old lady, you hear the music pounding from the room next door. But they are fun.

After the loss to Spain, a battle for third place in the Nations League now awaits – a double meeting against France in the turn of the month November–December.
