The Norwegian spring-spawning herring, which is the most consumed herring in Sweden, gets a red light in the World Wildlife Fund's latest Fish Guide.
All mackerel caught in the Northeast Atlantic also gets a red light, which means avoid, in the guide.
"We can see once again that the fishing being conducted is not sustainable. And unfortunately, both mackerel and spring-spawning herring are subject to too much fishing pressure", says Inger Melander, marine and fisheries expert at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in a press release.
WWF urges Swedes to be cautious when choosing herring for Easter. Herring in waters around Iceland and northwestern Atlantic are good alternatives to the Norwegian spring-spawning herring.
"We must remember that fish are not just food, but have a key role in the oceans", says Inger Melander.
