For the third year in a row, Wrexham AFC advanced in the English league system. Second place behind Birmingham City in League One means that the famous and old Welsh club will play in The Championship, the second division under Premier League, for the first time next season.
Managing Director Humphrey Ker flirts with Newcastle's Swedish striker when TT asks about dream signings during a digital interview.
If I had been really polite, I would have said some Swedish player. Alexander Isak, thank you. We would have liked him, he says and continues:
– A big thing would be the first time we can sign a Welsh national team player. That would have meant a lot to our fans. Wrexham used to be a team that had many players in the Welsh national team.
Going against the tide
Humphrey Ker is part of Wrexham's North American club management with Hollywood actors and owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the helm. Since the duo bought the club during the 2020-2021 season, the men's team has been followed by a TV team. The documentary series "Welcome to Wrexham" has been crucial for the club's sporting success.
It's incredibly important. In recent years, we've seen our turnover increase enormously. A large part has been driven by the interest generated by the documentary series, says Ker, also an actor and comedian, and continues:
Regarding our jersey sponsors, the contracts have not been signed as much through traditional reasons, such as people seeing them from the stands or through British media reporting. They have been seen through the documentary series.
Tough season ahead
It's not clear if there will be another season for the series. Humphrey Ker believes that regardless, the upcoming football season will be the toughest yet in the hunt for Premier League.
I think it's inevitable that we will have a difficult season at some point. We've had four years of relatively unimpeded success. I think we will struggle at some point.
