The ship, named Tampa, was discovered about 80 kilometers off the town of Newquay at a depth of more than 90 meters.
After being torpedoed by a German submarine in the Bristol Channel, the Tampa sank in less than three minutes, killing all 131 people on board. It was the single largest loss of life for the US Navy during World War I.
“We were left with a lasting sadness when the Tampa sank with her entire crew in 1918. Finding the wreck unites us with their sacrifice and reminds us that loyalty endures,” said Kevin Lunday of the US Coast Guard in a statement.
