Hamburger chain McDonald's is seeing a sales boost in the US market during the third quarter. Part of the explanation is believed to be the return of a previously unreleased dish to the menu after a nine-year absence.

In July, the hamburger giant chose to introduce the "snack wrap," a form of chicken tortilla that had only been available at restaurants in Australia, the United States and Canada. At the same time, the number of restaurant visitors increased by 15 percent, the AP news agency reports.

Overall, sales in comparable restaurants in the US market increased by 2.4 percent, which was a larger increase than the market expected. In addition to the menu changes, some price reductions have also been implemented and customers have been offered subsidized add-ons to their orders.

Internationally, however, sales were in line with market expectations and the stock fell 1.4 percent in pre-market trading on Wall Street. So far this year, the rise is 3.2 percent compared to 15 percent for the broad S&P 500 index.
