The ceasefire in Gaza has alleviated the worst of the famine, the UN-backed IPC, which monitors the world's food supply, reports. However, it warns that the critical situation remains.

The IPC in August determined that full-blown famine, the highest level on a five-point scale, existed in Gaza City and the surrounding area. The new report, which includes a forecast until mid-April, does not assess any areas in the Gaza Strip as reaching the highest level. Instead, the entire Gaza Strip is assessed to be at level 4.

During the ceasefire, Gazans' access to food has improved, the IPC says . But the situation is fragile and could quickly deteriorate.

"Despite the improved situation, the Gaza Strip still faces high levels of acute food insecurity and acute malnutrition," they write, noting that "only basic survival needs" are currently being met.

Israel rejects Friday's report, reports AP, just as it has done with previous assessments from the IPC.
