World leaders condemn shooting at Washington correspondents' dinner

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says an event aimed at celebrating a free press must never become a place characterized by fear.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer writes on X that he is shocked by the events in Washington, DC last night.

“Any attack on democratic institutions or press freedom must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu writes on X that he and his wife Sara are shaken by the "assassination attempt on President Donald Trump."

"We wish the injured police officer a full and speedy recovery," he adds.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney writes that political violence “has no place in democracy.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the shooting, as did Australia's Anthony Albanese, who praised the security personnel and the authorities' efforts.

US Senator and Republican Lindsey Graham expresses relief that everyone survived.

“The only thing I am certain of is that the times we live in are giving rise to an unprecedented stream of threats against President Trump and other government officials,” he writes on X.

Democrat Nancy Pelosi, a member of the US House of Representatives, writes on X that it is a great relief that the president, first lady and all other participants are safe "after a terrifying act of violence inside the venue."
