An analysis by the state-run National Energy System estimates that England and Scotland's group-stage matches in the World Cup could increase electricity demand by around 600 megawatts. This is equivalent to the combined consumption of Leeds and Glasgow, with populations of just over 800,000 and 650,000 respectively.
The rise in electricity demand is believed to be mainly due to television viewing, but also other factors such as Britons using tea kettles and opening and closing refrigerators during half-time. Scotland opens the World Cup against Haiti while England faces Croatia.
