Several women convicted of crimes related to serious organized crime will serve their sentences in facilities for men. The security is not enough at the country's current women's prisons, reports Sveriges Radio P4 Örebro.
Already now, a few women are placed at Kumla facility and the Prison and Probation Service is working on providing around 30 spots for women at the country's seven so-called class 1 facilities, with the goal of having them in place by the turn of the year.
One problem is that the female and male inmates are not allowed to see or communicate with each other.
So the women must be able to move back and forth from work without being seen or heard by the male inmates. So it's as if they are in two completely different places, says Thomas Wihrén, expert on the section for capacity and analysis at the Prison and Probation Service, to the radio.
