Gas prices have skyrocketed in recent weeks due to the cold winter that has gripped most of Europe.

"Gas is priced according to expectations about how the winter will be, and now it seems to be colder than expected," Kristian Rune Poulsen, an energy analyst at the industry organization Green Power Denmark, told Ritzau.

High gas prices on the continent are spilling over into electricity prices, including in Sweden. Since the turn of the year, the gas price on the Dutch stock exchange has risen 49 percent to just over 40 euros per megawatt hour.

The average electricity price in Sweden so far in January is between 84 öre and 1.07 kronor per kWh, most expensive in the south, according to the electricity exchange Nord Pool. You have to go back to 2023 to find higher prices.
