The wind is picking up to strong or very strong in the Norrland mountains in connection with a low-pressure system passing north of Scandinavia, while accompanying fronts are moving eastward over the country, according to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).
Yellow warnings for wind have been issued for several mountain areas for Wednesday and all of Thursday.
For the Norrbotten mountains, SMHI is warning of wind in combination with snowfall when the westerly wind increases on Wednesday – at the same time as rain turns into snowfall. The wind can reach 15–20 meters per second.
For the Jämtland, Härjedalen, and northernmost Dalarna mountains, as well as the Västerbotten mountains, the warning applies to wind with a strength of 18 to 23 meters per second.
Those who are not properly experienced in mountain terrain are advised by SMHI to consider postponing a planned mountain tour. Furthermore, SMHI is warning of the risk of freezing and that it may be difficult to move around and anchor tents in these conditions.
SMHI has three levels of weather warnings:
Yellow warning: Consequences for society, some risks for the general public.
Orange warning: Serious consequences for society, danger for the general public.
Red warning: Very serious consequences for society, great danger for the general public.
