With the reorganization of the national team management, the role he has had since 2018 will disappear.

It's win-or-go-home at Strawberry Arena on Tuesday night for Stefan Pettersson too. If the national team makes it to the World Cup finals in North America, he'll be working for a few more months. With Poland's World Cup spot in the playoff final, Pettersson is cleaning out his desk at the federation already this week.

"Then the new organization takes over. I started with a World Cup and hopefully I can finish with one," says the former national team striker (31 caps from 1983–1993).

How would you summarize your time as national team manager?

"Oh, can't I wait with that? I'd be happy to do it after the World Cup, I thought I'd say."

Far ahead in planning

How does it feel to quit?

"I haven't really gotten into those feelings yet. I'll deal with that when it comes. I've known about it for a while. Whatever was going on in my head at first, I've let go. There's been full focus on this and it still is."

"Hopefully we can talk about the World Cup on Wednesday," says Pettersson.

The World Cup planning is largely complete.

"We have a match in Norway (June 1) and then we're trying to get one more before we go. We have to be there five days before the first match. Those are the rules," he says.

There will be an earlier departure than that, but the details will only be released on Wednesday - if a World Cup is coming up.

No camp in Båstad

Ahead of the most recent championships, the national team had a camp in Båstad. That is not the case this time. Rather, it will be in the Stockholm area, says Stefan Pettersson.

Exactly when the entire national team will gather is not clear.

"It depends a bit on when the clubs end their season," says Pettersson.

A camp at home will probably begin at the end of May, followed by international matches, a short break and then departure for the USA at least a week before the first group stage match.

Sweden will play a possible opening match against Tunisia in Monterrey, Mexico, on June 15 (local time in Sweden). Then the Netherlands will play in Houston and Japan in Dallas.

Dallas will be the national team's base. Or Poland's.
