Protests, which are going under the slogan "no kings," were broadly directed against authoritarian rule and the Trump administration's policy.

The demonstrations have been organized in a number of American states and major cities on Saturday. In New York, tens of thousands of people defied the rain to show their discontent with everything from the government's Palestine policy to perceived restrictions on freedom of speech.

“Gangster state or freedom of speech?”

Rain also fell on demonstrators in Philadelphia, who gathered outside the city's museum and the stairs that have become famous in the film "Rocky."

So what do you say, Philly, are you ready to strike back? Do you want a gangster state or do you want freedom of speech in America? asked Congressman Jamie Raskin from the stairs.

Disturbances have occurred at some places, but according to the AP news agency, the protests have continued peacefully at most locations.

One person was taken "critically injured" to the hospital after a shooting in Salt Lake City in the state of Utah. According to the local police, one person has been arrested.

Incidents also occurred in Los Angeles, where the police used tear gas, and in Virginia, where a person was run over by a car that accelerated towards a group of demonstrators.

In the state of Minnesota, organizers canceled the planned rally after the murder of a leading state politician and an attempt to murder another.

About the debated parade

The protests coincide with the debated military parade that was held in Washington on Saturday. In connection with the event, which commemorates the army's 250th anniversary, several protests were organized – but without hindering the parade's implementation. However, a doll – depicting Trump sitting on a golden toilet seat – was seen being rolled through the crowd by demonstrators.

The grassroots movement No Kings – no kings – which coordinated the wave of Trump-critical demonstrations, claims that "millions" of people participated in the protests.
