The government is now taking the next step to allow the revocation of Swedish citizenship. On Wednesday, government investigator Anita Linder will present her proposal, which sets out when and how it could happen.

People with dual citizenship should be able to have their Swedish citizenship revoked if they obtained it on incorrect grounds, for example by providing false information, bribery or threats - or if they have committed particularly serious crimes.

Particularly serious crimes include crimes against national security and terrorist crimes, but also certain serious crimes committed in a gang environment that seriously harm the state's "vital interests".

In order for the bill to come into force, the constitution must also be amended. Such a bill has already been submitted and the constitutional amendments are proposed to come into force on 1 January 2027.

The investigator proposes the current legal amendments should come into force one year later, on 1 January 2028. She also suggests that the Swedish Migration Board should be the authority that decides to revoke citizenship.

At present, it is not possible to revoke Swedish citizenship. However, Johan Forssell points out that the possibility already exists in other Nordic countries.

According to the police, 1,400 active gang members in Sweden today have dual citizenship. The Minister of Migration says that the bill would create completely new opportunities to expel them from the country.
