One case occurred in Västerbotten where a wheelchair-bound person was denied access to the bus – the driver believed the wheelchair was too heavy, which was not true.
Moreover, it was claimed that the bus did not have equipment to secure the wheelchair, writes the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) in a press release.
In the second case, which occurred in Örebro, the driver could not use the bus's lift. The person in the wheelchair then had to crawl on board with the help of their assistant and a fellow passenger – which was painful and felt degrading.
"It is a recurring problem that people who use wheelchairs are denied access to public transportation", says Rebecca Hellgren, section chief at DO's legal unit in the press release.
The two responsible operations are now requested to pay discrimination compensation to the affected persons. If they do not pay, the DO may take the cases to court.
