The two minke whales are the first to be killed in a commercial Icelandic whaling hunt since 2023, Rúv reports.

The minke whale is the world's second-largest whale species after the blue whale.

Iceland did not hunt whales in 2024 and 2025 because of reduced demand and declining profitability. But last week the hunt resumed, drawing criticism from animal rights groups.

Iceland, Norway and Japan are the only countries that still actively hunt whales. However, in recent years, Icelandic public opinion has changed, and the government in Reykjavík has announced that a ban will be introduced this fall. Most of the country's whale meat is exported to Japan.
