After two seasons in the SHL and with Frölunda, Linus Weissbach has taken the step of playing in the Russian ice hockey league next season.

"It was a big decision, and I thought about it for quite some time. Many Swedish ice hockey players want to play in the KHL, so maybe my move will open up similar opportunities for others in the future," Weissbach told sports.ru.

With the move, the 28-year-old became the fourth current Swede to play in the KHL, and the first to move directly from the SHL to Russia since the war in Ukraine broke out in February 2022.

The contract with St. Petersburg is for one year.

SKA St. Petersburg is owned by the state-owned Russian gas giant Gazprom. The club's chairman, Gennady Timchenko, has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and is one of the most powerful people in the country, Forbes reports. He is subject to sanctions from the US, UK and EU.
