Livadia's record temperature was measured on Saturday, reports the national weather agency Meteo. Elsewhere in the country, warm weather has been reported this week, reminiscent of May rather than March.
Such high temperatures so early in March, it has never happened before, says meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos to the TV company ERT.
But on Tuesday, it will turn around – significantly.
A cold air mass will bring rain and snow across the country, says Giannopoulos.
In the capital, the contrast will be somewhat less.
In Athens, we have 27 degrees today, but it will drop to 11. It's a rollercoaster.
Greece is clearly being hit extra hard by the weather extremes triggered by human dependence on fossil fuels. Last year, the country had both the hottest summer and warmest winter on record, according to Meteo's statistics.
The fluctuations are hitting hard, for example, the agricultural sector. But if the extremely hot summers continue, they are also feared to scare off some tourists.
