The suspected perpetrator behind the attack on two National Guardsmen in the US capital Washington, DC, has pleaded not guilty during a preliminary hearing. The suspect, a man from Afghanistan, has worked for US intelligence in his home country.

In a brief, formalized, and preliminary hearing, the 29-year-old man declared his innocence. He is accused of murder and violent assault on two members of the US National Guard deployed in the capital, near the White House.

The suspect, who was shot in the attack, participated from his hospital bed via video.

A 20-year-old woman was killed in the attack, while a 24-year-old man was seriously injured.

The suspected perpetrator has a history of working with the US military in Afghanistan. He worked for the US for ten years in the country - including for the CIA in Kandahar province, according to a statement from the head of the agency, John Ratcliffe.

The man came to the United States in September 2021 when the United States completely left Afghanistan and the Islamist Taliban movement took power in the country.
