The trio was stopped by the police on Sunday evening when they waded out into the famous Trevi Fountain. When the tourists were escorted away, one of them, a 30-year-old man, broke free from the police's grip and jumped back into the pool.

Alcohol was definitely involved, says a spokesperson for the Rome police to CNN.

The man was fined 500 euros, equivalent to approximately 5,500 kronor. He is also banned from visiting the landmark for the rest of his life.

The Trevi Fountain in central Rome was built in 1762. After Federico Fellini's film "La dolce vita" from 1960, in which Anita Ekberg bathes in the fountain wearing a evening gown, thousands of tourists have, to the authorities' dismay, wanted to recreate the culturally iconic scene.

Every year, about ten tourists are fined for dipping everything from toes to water bottles in the fountain. Others are punished for attempting to steal the large quantities of coins that tourists throw into the water annually.
