Lindsey Vonn expects to be at the start of the Olympic downhill race on Sunday - despite a meniscus injury and a torn cruciate ligament in her left knee. The American alpine star said this at a press conference. "As long as there is a chance, I will try," she said.

The 41-year-old crashed dramatically in the downhill race in Crans-Montana on Friday, injuring her left knee. When Vonn met the press in Italy on Tuesday, it emerged that she had a meniscus injury and a torn cruciate ligament, but she still expects to start at the Olympics.

"This is obviously not what I had hoped for. I know what my chances were before the crash and I know my chances are not the same now, but I know there is still a chance," she said.

I will do everything in my power to stand in the starting gate.

After three days of physical therapy and consultation with doctors, she went skiing on Tuesday.

Lindsey Vonn is one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time, with 84 World Cup victories and an Olympic gold medal. This season she has had success, winning two World Cup downhill races, after making a comeback last winter following several years away.

"This would be the best comeback I've made so far. Definitely the most dramatic," she said.

The first training session for the downhill will be held on Thursday.
