In the sparkling sunshine in S:t Moritz, a super-G competition was held that in many people's eyes had 30 participants.
Almost everyone was waiting for number 31, Lindsey Vonn. The comebacking American has turned 40 years old and her last start in the World Cup was at the beginning of 2019.
Vonn started a bit slowly at the top of the slope, but gained speed. When she crossed the finish line, she placed 14th, only 1.18 seconds behind the leading Austrian Cornelia Hütter.
Today was just the first step and I didn't hope for more. I wanted to reach the finish line and have a solid result, and that's exactly what I got, says Vonn and continues:
I didn't take any risks and drove a bit conservatively in some parts, but overall I did it really well. The only thing that's needed now is a bit faster driving at the top of the slope, then it will look really good.
Just two weeks ago, Lindsey Vonn competed in a couple of smaller Fis competitions in Colorado, but then she only managed a 19th place as her best result.
Vonn suffered several severe injuries towards the end of her career and as recently as in April, she underwent an operation where she had a titanium half-knee implanted. Three Olympic Games medals, eight World Championship medals, and 82 World Cup victories are on her long list of merits.
Already on Sunday, Vonn will be at the starting line again when a new super-G competition awaits in the World Cup.
