The win meant that Slovakia temporarily topped Group 1 of the C Division – but after Sweden's 3–0 win over Estonia later on Monday evening, the team was again relegated to second place. Both teams are on 10 points.
Slovakia took the expected lead after a quarter of an hour in Baku, but it was not of their own making. Home defender Rahil Mammadov steered in a low Slovakian cross into his own goal.
The reply came in the 38th minute. Then Toral Bajramov nodded in the equalizer behind a helpless Marek Rodák in Slovakia's goal.
In the 70th minute, the home team's Mahir Emrel was sent off after a second yellow card, and five minutes later Slovakia could settle the match. Then Sparta Prague star Lukás Haraslín scored the 2–1 goal. In the 87th minute, Dávid Duris secured Slovakia's win to 3–1.
