Despite continued setbacks since he took over at the end of last year, manager Rúben Amorim still has the confidence of United's owners and club management. This summer, a significant player turnover is expected.
Victor Nilsson Lindelöf's contract expires on June 30. According to consistent English media reports, it will not be extended. When asked if he wants to stay in the club he joined in 2017, the defender replies:
I'm very comfortable in United. I've been there for a long time and it's the world's best league. I'll have to talk to everyone involved going forward.
Rumors about Benfica
At the same time, there is speculation about a possible return to Benfica. National team colleague Samuel Dahl, on loan at Benfica from Roma, said during the national team gathering in Marbella last week that there is talk in the Portuguese giant club about Nilsson Lindelöf.
It's hard to say now how it will turn out. Benfica is a club that means a lot to me. It shaped me into the player I am today. I don't know what will happen and what decision will be made.
Is it a family decision?
Good question. I don't just have myself to think about. It's a decision that has to be made with my family. I'm trying to think about what's best for me football-wise. Hopefully, it will go hand in hand with what's good for my family.
He does, however, rule out a move back to Sweden after the season.
"Takes a toll on the psyche"
The defender has had a season behind him with recurring injuries, something he acknowledges has taken a mental toll on him.
I'm used to playing a lot of matches. Not being able to do that continuously has been tough. It takes a toll on the psyche to get injured again and again and sit in the gym to rehab. It's been extremely difficult.
Victor Nilsson Lindelöf did not play at all in the 0-1 debacle against Luxembourg. Against Northern Ireland at Strawberry arena, he starts from the beginning.
We're absolutely not satisfied with how it looked on the pitch last time. Everyone felt afterwards that it's not the level we want to be at, he says.
