Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams is about to make history as the oldest woman to play at the Australian Open. The tennis star arrives there out of form. For the second week in a row, the 45-year-old was eliminated in the first round of a WTA tournament.

Venus Williams spent 87 minutes on court in Hobart, Australia before losing to Tatjana Maria, ranked 42nd in the world. The German won 6–4, 6–3.

Last week in Auckland, Williams was also eliminated in the first round.

Now the American is set to play in the Australian Open. The former world number one received a wildcard and the 45-year-old will become the oldest woman to play the tournament in Melbourne.

Williams has not played the Australian Open, which begins on Sunday, for five years. She made a comeback this summer after a 16-month hiatus and has only played sporadically on the tour in recent seasons. Williams is currently ranked 145th in the world.
