The Venezuelan parliament has given initial approval to a proposed amnesty law.

The bill, proposed by interim President Delcy Rodríguez, will be reintroduced in parliament on Tuesday. If passed, it would lift a ban on several prominent opposition politicians from running for political office, according to a draft seen by AFP.

This applies, among others, to opposition leader and Nobel Prize winner María Corina Machado.

The amnesty reportedly covers treason, terrorism and spreading hatred - criminal categories often used to imprison opposition figures in the dictatorship. It is intended to extend back to 1999, when the so-called Bolivarian Revolution was launched by socialist leader Hugo Chávez.
