The new law, which is expected to lead to the release of hundreds of political prisoners who were detained at various times in the country, was signed by interim President Delcy Rodríguez shortly after the parliament's decision.
The amnesty law is the core of reforms that Rodríguez has implemented since the overthrow and capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
The law contains conditions and exceptions for those covered by the amnesty. According to El País, 13 periods of social and political unrest in the country between 1999 and 2026 are covered - three more than in the proposal previously submitted. According to the newspaper, military personnel imprisoned for rebellion (174 people) will not be covered by the amnesty.
