Electricity grid giants raise prices sharply again: "Not reasonable"

Vattenfall and Ellevio are raising electricity network fees sharply. The reason is large investments in the electricity network, according to the energy giants. It is not reasonable that they are raising the fee far above inflation year after year, says Håkan Larsson at the consumer organization Villaägarna.

The country's electricity network companies have a monopoly and have increased the fee by almost 60 percent over the past ten years. Now it's time again. Vattenfall will increase it by 14 percent from the beginning of the year, or about 130 kronor per month for an electrically heated house and 35 kronor for an apartment.

One of the other giants, Ellevio, is increasing the fixed fee by eight and the variable fee by twelve percent for residential customers. The system is being changed for apartment customers, which is why it is more difficult to calculate how it will affect them. The fixed fee is being increased for many by nine percent, while some will have their fee reduced. But according to Ellevio's press manager Jesper Liveröd, the average increase across all customers is only five percent.

Both companies cite substantial investments in the electricity grid as the reason for the large price increases.

"Horrible" increase

In 2025, the electricity network fee generally rose among all companies around the country by an average of 10.6 percent. These were the highest increases measured since measurements began in 1996, and in total, it is 57 percent since 2015, according to the housing and accommodation organization Nils Holgersson Group.

Håkan Larsson, head of social policy at Villaägarna, says that the latest announcement of fee increases has members going crazy. He has received many emails in the last few hours where the increase is called "horrible", among other things.

"I think it sums up the problem quite well that a monopoly company can raise prices by 14 percent. That would never have worked in a competitive market when inflation is around 2 percent," he says.

Lower the electricity tax

According to Företagarna CEO Magnus Demervall, it is positive that the government is lowering the electricity tax after the turn of the year, but "that reduction will be erased after this price shock," he writes to TT:

"The government should now make further cuts in the electricity tax and abolish indexation."

The Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate regulates the electricity network companies' fees based on legislation. But the authority has repeatedly lost to the companies in court when it has tried to hold back the increased revenue limits. Unlike electricity trading, where the customer can choose the electricity company, the electricity network company is not selectable.

Facts: Share of electricity network fee

TT

A household's electricity bill consists of several parts: the electricity itself, the electricity network fee and energy tax.

For a residential customer who consumes approximately 20,000 kWh in a year, the electricity network fee accounts for approximately 32 percent, electricity for 41 percent and energy tax for 27 percent.

For the apartment customer, who uses 2,000 kWh, the electricity network fee constitutes 45 percent, electricity 36 percent and energy tax 19 percent.

The calculations are based on an average price of electricity.
