Olympic Games fifth place, World Championship fourth place and now awarded for the second time for her social commitment. But life as an elite athlete is tough economically for discus thrower Vanessa Kamga. The second after I stepped out of the cage in the World Championship final, it's about doing what I think is economically sustainable, she says.

On Monday evening, Vanessa Kamga received the award Årets röst för flickor, which was presented by Plan International and Veckorevyn, for her work with Kamga Power, a social project for teenage girls. Earlier this year, she received the Sportspegelpriset at the Idrottsgalan.

Through these awards, I feel that people appreciate and see the work I do and want me to continue doing good things, says Kamga.

In her project, which has existed for almost five years, she organizes sports activities, strength training instruction, and leadership training for girls between 13 and 17 years old to strengthen them.

I want to take them on the journey of how they can develop and become their best self, she says.

Big challenge

But making an elite sports effort and at the same time having a large social commitment is an economic challenge, and it is now after the competition season that the greatest focus is on finding sponsors.

I will not hide that getting financial means to make my effort in the way I want and need to reach the world elite, where there are many levels to take, is a challenge. There, I have to hope that people see the hard work I do and want to be on the journey, she says.

That's what I really hope for in 2026 - to get more sponsors and people who engage in my athletics effort and my social sustainability project.

"Found my way"

Vanessa Kamga became Olympic fifth last year and World Championship fourth in Tokyo in September after setting a Swedish record twice. Now she is waiting for rest and then a basic season with the European Championship in Birmingham as the goal for 2026.

I feel that I have really found my way forward, so I continue on the same path. I think it's healthy to dare to trust what you do and not think that you always have to start changing things. I continue with what I've done in recent years, she says.

Diskus thrower Vanessa Kamga started the social sustainability project Kamga Power at the turn of the year 2021.

The purpose is to guide 13-17 year old girls into sports, since 70 percent of girls stop playing sports in their teens.

Kamga lectures at, among other things, schools and organizations, and she organizes free sports activities for girls. Including strength training workshops where she instructs and teaches about training. She also holds leadership training for the girls.

The goal of the commitment is to strengthen teenage girls. "I want to strengthen them for life, not just get them to come into contact with sports", says Kamga.

The commitment has given Vanessa Kamga the Sportspegelnpriset at the Idrottsgalan 2025 and the award Årets röst för flickor 2025, which is presented by Plan International and Veckorevyn.
