Just over 11,000 Swedes have applied for the new electric car premium so far. Just under half have been approved, and of those, 1,681 people have also chosen an electric car and received the green light from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

TT's compilation shows that a used Volvo XC40 Recharge is the most popular choice - 133 new owners are now getting the electric car partly financed by the state. The most common is the 2023 model year, which often costs around 350,000 kronor according to online advertisements.

Other popular Volvo choices are the C40 and EX30 with 52 and 37 premiums granted, respectively.

The new support applies to purchases of both new and used electric cars with a price ceiling of SEK 450,000 and a price floor of SEK 64,800. The compilation shows that a clear majority of buyers have so far chosen used cars.

Model Y dominates

After the popular XC40 model, the Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen ID 4 come in joint second place, with 112 approved applications each.

As for Tesla, the Model Y is the most popular with 76 approved purchases, followed by the Model 3 with 53. Used copies of both models can often be found for around SEK 300,000.

Two new car owners, a man and a woman, have chosen the Model X - which Tesla describes as a “luxury electric SUV.” Used models can cost around SEK 750,000, but the cars that are now partly financed through the electric car premium are older model years.

Among the French brands, most people turn to Renault and in particular the Zoe model, which clearly stands out with 85 grants.

Zoe also stands out in terms of price. Older models can cost around SEK 70,000, which is just above the electric car premium floor.

The Porsche application is being processed.

An application has also been made for a Porsche. It was submitted by a man in Western Sweden in early May and concerns a Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo from the 2023 model year.

The man has certified that the purchase price does not exceed 450,000 SEK.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has not yet made a decision in the matter.

You must live in a rural municipality or in an area with limited access to public transport.

No one in your household may have an income so high that they pay state income tax. The household's total income may not exceed 80 percent of the average income.

No one in the household may already own an electric car or plug-in hybrid.

It must be an electric car (not hybrid) and the price must be under 450,000 SEK.

The support will be SEK 1,300 per month for a maximum of 36 months - a total of SEK 46,800 for the entire period. In addition, you can receive a starting grant of SEK 18,000 if the household has less than 50 percent of the average income.
