After the U.S. men's national ice hockey team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime in Sunday's final in Milan, Italy, to conclude the Winter Olympics, President Trump called the team in the locker room via video call.
According to several American media outlets, the 79-year-old president congratulated the team on the victory and invited the players to be honored during the president's annual State of the Union speech in the White House, on Wednesday night, local time in Sweden.
Laughed at
"I just have to tell you that we need to bring the women's team, you know," Trump said, laughing and speculating about what would happen if he didn't.
"I think I should be impeached," he said, and was met with laughter from several of the players.
On Monday, a spokesperson for the women's national ice hockey team, which also beat Canada 2-1 in overtime in Thursday's Olympic final in Milan, announced that the players will not be coming to Washington, D.C.
How are the men doing?
"Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments after the Olympics, the players are unable to participate. They are honored to be included and grateful for the recognition," the spokesperson said, according to CNN.
CNN has not received confirmation on whether the players on the men's team will accept their invitation.
Several American athletes have declined invitations to the White House and President Donald Trump over the years.
