The USA's Vice President JD Vance says in a post on X that he will accompany his wife Usha to Greenland on Friday. The visit takes place against the backdrop of the escalated American rhetoric about annexing the autonomous Danish territory.

There was so much uproar surrounding Usha's visit to Greenland on Friday that I decided I didn't want her to have all the fun to herself, so I'll be joining her, says Vance in a video statement that he published on the platform.

The Vice President says he will visit the American space force on Greenland's northwestern coast and also "check out how security is doing".

Unfortunately, I think leaders in both the USA and Denmark have ignored Greenland for far too long. It has been bad for Greenland. It has also been bad for security in the entire world. We believe we can take things in a different direction, says Vance without presenting any evidence for his statement.

Not an official visit

It has been previously known that Usha Vance is visiting Greenland together with the USA's national security adviser Mike Waltz and the American energy minister Chris Wright on Thursday-Saturday.

The visit, which is not official, takes place against the backdrop of USA's President Donald Trump's repeated statements about the country wanting to take over the autonomous Danish territory.

I think Greenland will become something that maybe exists in our future, said Trump on Monday.

"Unacceptable pressure"

A previously announced visit to a dog sled competition on Greenland has now been cancelled. Usha Vance will instead accompany her husband to the American military base.

From the White House, it has previously been said that the trip is about learning more about Greenland and its history, culture, and people.

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in an interview with TV2 earlier on Tuesday that she views the situation seriously and emphasized that one "cannot make a private visit with official representatives of another country".

This sets unacceptable pressure on both Denmark and Greenland in this situation, said Frederiksen
