The US is imposing sanctions on Iran's so-called shadow fleet, which the country uses to circumvent oil sanctions.

The sanctions target nine oil tankers from countries including India and Oman, and their owners. The US says the ships are “collectively transporting hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of Iranian oil and gasoline” to foreign markets.

According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the sanctions target “a crucial component of the way Iran generates funds to oppress its own citizens.”

Iran has been subject to international sanctions for many years, including from the US after the US withdrew from an international nuclear agreement with Iran in 2018.
