The presidential order was one of many that Donald Trump signed on the first day of his second mandate. According to the order, it is incompatible for a soldier to identify as a transperson and live "a dignified, truthful and disciplined lifestyle", writes BBC.
In March, the ban was blocked by a federal court in Washington, which considered that the Trump administration had not presented sufficient evidence that transpersons in the military threaten the corps' effectiveness.
The Justice Department responded by submitting a request to the Supreme Court to lift the blocking, which has now been approved. This means that the presidential order can now be implemented, while the lawsuit in the lower instance remains.
Trump has taken several steps to restrict trans persons' rights since he took office in January. Earlier this year, the government has, among other things, worked to ban trans women from competing on the women's side in various sports.
