The United States Trade Representative (USTR) believes that China should be punished for its attempts to dominate the semiconductor industry, but will nevertheless hold off on imposing tariffs on the country, US authorities say.
The tariffs will instead be introduced no earlier than 18 months, on June 23, 2027.
USTR's investigations show that China's goal "for dominance is unreasonable and burdens or restricts American trade," the agency writes in a statement.
Today, there are no tariffs between countries.
Beijing opposes the conclusion and accuses the US of abusing the tariff system to “unreasonably suppress Chinese companies.”
