US reportedly proposes Russian gas sales to Europe via Ukraine using American intermediary

The United States wants Russia to be able to sell natural gas to Europe through pipelines in Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The idea is that Russian gas would be sold through an American intermediary, circumventing European sanctions and opening up lucrative opportunities for American investors.

The newspaper writes that it has learned of the proposal from people who were present when it was presented by American envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff during trips to Moscow and Kyiv in September.

The US president has in recent weeks tried to bring about an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Russia has rejected such an agreement and continued to bomb energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

According to the American negotiators, a return to the European natural gas market could be a strong incentive for Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a deal. It could also be lucrative for Ukraine, as the gas would be transported through the country, allowing it to benefit from transit fees.

The EU has decided that all Russian natural gas should be phased out by November 1, 2027.
