The United States has released former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández from federal prison. The ex-president was convicted of drug-related crimes in the United States. The release comes after President Donald Trump pardoned the former head of state of Honduras.

The information about the former president's release comes from the US Bureau of Prisons, reports AP. Juan Orlando Hernández has been accused and convicted of, among other things, promising support from the Honduran military to protect drug-related activities such as drug trafficking.

Hernández was released from a West Virginia prison on Monday, according to his wife, Ana García de Hernández, who wrote on social media that her husband is now “a free man.”

Trump's controversial pardon comes as the United States attacks ships in the Caribbean Sea accused of smuggling drugs from Venezuela.

The decision also coincides with the presidential election held in Honduras, where the results are too close between the main candidates for the electoral commission to declare a winner. Trump is supporting right-wing candidate Nasry Asfura, who on Tuesday led by 515 votes over his opponent Salvador Nasralla – who is also on the political right.

The US president has sent a warning to Honduras not to "change the result."
