The number of US troops on NATO's eastern flank will be reduced, but according to NATO officials, Washington's commitment to the alliance remains "clear."

Information about the US's plans to reduce the number of soldiers in Eastern Europe has reached NATO in advance, which calls the change an "adjustment".

“Even with this adjustment, the US military presence in Europe remains larger than it has been in many years, with significantly more US forces on the continent than before 2022,” a NATO official said.

There are usually around 80,000 to 100,000 US troops on European soil. The number of troops to leave Europe is not yet public, but according to reports, US forces in Romania will be reduced from 1,700 to around 1,000 soldiers.

"While we don't yet know the extent of the US drawdown, we know the direction it is taking: fewer US troops and resources," said Giuseppe Spatafora, research analyst at the EU Institute for Security Studies.

Unusually, the United States currently only has one aircraft carrier deployed, off South America, where US President Donald Trump is putting pressure on several countries due to drug production and smuggling.

There are currently no US aircraft carriers deployed in Europe or the Middle East.
