The Ministry for Foreign Affairs states that it has ordered the departure of all personnel who are not considered necessary at the US Embassy in Baghdad, based on its latest review and a commitment "to keep Americans safe, both at home and abroad".

The embassy in Baghdad has already had limited staffing, and the decision will not affect a large number of employees.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs also allows non-essential personnel and family members of embassy staff to leave Bahrain and Kuwait.

Relatives of military personnel in the region have also been given permission to leave if they so wish, according to a decision by Defense Minister Pete Hegseth. The US military command in the region, Centcom, is monitoring "the increased unrest in the Middle East" according to a statement.
