Members of Parliament from both The Republicans and The Democrats are taking extra security measures after the noted murder of Charlie Kirk. Some events are being moved indoors while others are being cancelled altogether.
Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has postponed two public events in North Carolina during the weekend, reports NBC News.
Smaller gatherings
Other members are announcing that they will not be holding any large or public events in the future, instead sticking to smaller private gatherings. South Carolina Republican Nancy Mace says she will start carrying a firearm.
I will be carrying a firearm all the time, she says to reporters outside the Capitol.
Democratic member Jared Moskowitz had already earlier this year strengthened security after receiving death threats.
People are terrified in this building. I mean, it's not many of them who say it publicly, but they run to the Speaker and talk about security, he says.
"Dangerous society"
The number of threats against members of Congress increased already before Kirk's death, and there are limitations to how much one can protect all 535 members, emphasizes Speaker Mike Johnson.
We live in a dangerous society, and it's hard to protect even the President of the USA from all angles, he says.
The problem is ultimately the human heart, that's what we need to deal with.
